16 crew from capsized cargo rescued in N. Philippines

Sixteen crew members on board a small cargo ship that sank off northern
Philippines has been rescued by this noon, the chief commander of the Philippine
Coast Guard said. Admiral Wilfredo D. Tamayo told Xinhua in a telephone
interview that four people might still be missing as the coast guards are
verifying the information that there are 20 people on board. Tamayo said
passing ships cooperated with coast guard rescue team in saving the 16 crew
members. Two rescue ships and an islander plane has been carrying out the
operation at the scene, he said. The small cargo ship, LPT Mark Jayson, sank
20 nautical miles off Sabtang Island in the Batanes islands group late yesterday
after experiencing rough weather and strong waves.
