Indonesia expects ASEAN Summit proceed on schedule
1/12/2008 16:10

The Indonesian government attempted to proceed ASEAN Summit in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on schedule and without any postponement though large antigovernment protest intensified in Thailand, an official said in Jakarta today.
"We, officials from ASEAN member countries, keep in touch in terms of consultation to find the way out and attempt to proceed the Summit on schedule, from December 13 till 18," the Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry's spokesman Teuku Faizasyah told Xinhua by phone.
According to Faizasyah, postponement of the Summit will result in unfinished working agendas of ASEAN. He was sure that Thai government will find a win-win solution between the pro and anti- government massive protest.
"We are now coordinating each other among officials from all member countries to prepare for the Summit and to find way out for an undelayed schedule of the Summit," he said.
Queries have surfaced as to whether the 14th ASEAN Summit will be held as originally scheduled in mid December in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The Secretary-General of ASEAN Surin Pitsuwan is currently on his way to deal with this matter with Thailand, which currently holds the chairmanship of ASEAN. The ASEAN Secretariat would issue a statement once there is a definite clarification on this matter.
