A Jordanian political group has declared the launch of a "National
Campaign to Break the Embargo on Gaza" in a bid to break Israel's blockade to
the Palestinians there, local daily The Jordan Times reported today. The
campaign includes a series of demonstrations across the kingdom in the coming
weeks to condemn the embargo on Gaza, Hammam Said, a leader of the Muslim
Brotherhood, was quoted as declaring. He, meanwhile, announced that as part
of the campaign, a convoy of ships will also be sent to Gaza by the end of this
month, which will leave from Jordan's Aqaba on the Red Sea on Dec. 20. What
is happening in Gaza can only be described as the mass killing of an entire
nation that seeks its freedom, dignity and life like all other people across the
world, the group said in a statement. The Jordanian people "utterly refuse
the continuation of this blockade and call on the Arab world and international
community to intervene to end it," said the statement. International aid
groups have claimed that supplies recently sent to Gaza are not enough to
alleviate food shortages. Officials with the United Nations Relief and Works
Agency have warned of a humanitarian catastrophe in the near future if the
blockade is not lifted.
