Four people died and 14 were injured late Tuesday when a truck and a
minibus collided on a highway in mid-west Brazil, police said yesterday. The
accident took place on the BR-070 federal road, which connects the cities of
Cuiaba, Mato Grosso state's capital city, and Caceres. The microbus, which
traveled from Cuiaba with 17 people aboard, collided head-on with the truck
loaded with 40 tons of corn. The four victims, the 59-year-old truck driver
and three bus passengers, all died at the scene. Fourteen people were injured
and taken to local hospitals. The road where the accident took place was blocked
for more than three hours. Police are investigating the cause of the
accident. Officers said the road was slippery because of rain. The mishap was
the third serious traffic accident involving trucks and buses in the same region
since Saturday.
