Five soldiers were killed yesterday when pursuing Abu Sayyaf militants in
the southern Philippine province of Basilan, the military said today. Major
General Ben Dolorfino, Philippine Marines commandant, said that 24 others
soldiers were wounded in the clash that erupted in the morning and lasted till
the evening, Philippine TV network GMA News reported. The enemy suffered an
undetermined number of casualties, Dolorfino said. The 370-member Abu Sayyaf
group, listed by the United States as a terror organization, was a major
security threat in the Philippines for a string of bloody attacks it carried out
in public, including the 2004 Manila Bay blast that killed more than 100
civilians.
