Chief delegates to the six-party talks continued their discussion today
focusing on the verification protocol of denuclearization of the Democratic
People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). The second day gathering of the chief
delegates started this morning. China's top negotiator to the nuclear talks
Wu Dawei proposed the talks to focus on three major issues including
verification, continuous implementation of the second-phase action plan, and the
establishment of a peace and security mechanism in northeast Asia when
addressing the opening ceremony of the meeting yesterday. This is the third
chief delegates' meeting during the sixth round of the six-party talks,
involving China, the DPRK, the United States, the Republic of Korea (ROK),
Russia and Japan, after a five-month suspension. Christopher Hill, head of
the US delegation, said last night that six parties had discussed three issues
in the one-hour meeting, including fuel oil, the issues of disablement schedule
and verification. He said the Chinese delegation were preparing a
verification protocol for the next day's discussion after a series of
preliminary meetings with the other five parties.
