The Philippine military said today seven quarry workers kidnapped by
militants in southern Basilan province have been freed. A local news network
report said the victims were released last night, unharmed, and they have been
brought to a Marine base in Basilan for initial debriefing. The victims were
said to have been kidnapped by rogue members of the Moro Islamic Liberation
Front (MILF) on Dec. 1, but it cannot be confirmed by the military or the
Islamic group. The seven workers were returning to their office on board a
dump truck when they were stopped and taken by masked gunmen, local on-line news
network ABS-CBN News reported. Local security official said the kidnappers
were paid an inexplicit amount of money for "board and lodging" in exchange of
the quarry workers' release.
