Kazakh Foreign Minister Marat Tazhin said yesterday his country supported
Russia's proposal of setting up a new European security structure. Kazakhstan
believes the Russian proposal is in line with several key principles concerning
the safeguard of European security and setting up a new security structure has
become an urgent task for the continent, said Tazhin, who had just returned home
from a foreign ministers' meeting of the Organization of Security and
Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). The Kazakh minister also admitted that foreign
ministers from the OSCE member countries had quite heated debates about the
Russian proposal and remained divided on the issue. Russian President Dmitry
Medvedev presented the Russian proposal in June, months after the country
withdrew from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe amid mounting
tension between the United States and Russia over a planned US missile shield
program. French President Nicolas Sarkozy later responded by agreeing to
discuss the proposal within the OSCE as the first step.
