Australian minister says to announce emissions targets next week

Australian Climate Change Minister Penny Wong said in Canberra today
Australia will announce climate change targets next week. Wong noted that
targets to be announced next week would be fundamental to the design of the
scheme. Australia is under pressure to stick to an ambitious 25 percent
emissions cut by 2020 as a United Nations climate conference in Poland draws to
an end. "In terms of what Australia will do, I have said clearly that we will
be announcing our target range next week with the white paper," Wong told ABC
Radio. She said some progress was being made in technical groups on some
issues at the UN climate conference and the key issue was to establish clear
processes for the forthcoming Copenhagen agreement next year, the successor to
Kyoto. "Our targets are not simply words. They are real targets that are
backed by the government's approach to a comprehensive CPRS," she
said.
