Afghan National Police (ANF) and the US-led Coalition forces detained five
suspected militants during a combined operation to disrupt the Haqqani militant
network in eastern Afghan province of Khost yesterday, said a Coalition
statement released in Kabul today. The combined operation targeted a Haqqani
commander, known to facilitate roadside bomb attacks in the area, the statement
said. "The joint force searched the targeted compounds without incident, and
detained five suspected militants during the operation," it said. "Afghan and
Coalition security forces will continue to target these network's leadership to
improve the security of the Afghan people," said Col. Jerry O'Hara, US Forces
Afghanistan spokesman. Spiraling conflicts and Taliban-linked insurgency have
claimed more than 5,000 people, mostly militants, so far this year despite over
70,000-strong international troops stationed in strife-torn
Afghanistan.
