Peruvian police have arrested five suspects and seized 2.85 tons of
cocaine in a recent raid on a storehouse in downtown Lima, the Minister of the
Interior said yesterday in a communique. The drugs were mixed into a shipment
of 400 bags of guano bound for Europe via Puerto Callao which is more than 10
kilometers away from Lima. Peru is the world's second largest coca producer,
after Colombia, which produces about 300 tons of cocaine each year, accounting
for nearly one third of the world's total output. Last year, Peruvian police
seized and burned 20 tons of drugs including cocaine.
