The line-up of a Democrat Party- led Thai Cabinet is expected to be
completed by Thursday, said the party's secretary-general Suthep Thuagsuban
today. Suthep reaffirmed confidence on the Democrat Party's ability in
allocating the cabinet seats among the coalition parties, saying that the party
considered the competency of each candidate rather that a traditional "quota"
system, according to a report by Bangkok Post website. Suthep also suggested
that some "outsiders" might join the new cabinet by taking posts like defense
minister. He said the government may ask for advices from Army Chief Anupong
Paojinda. The Democrat party reportedly has approached ex-army commander
Pravit Wongsuwan to work as the minister of defense. He also affirmed that
Democrat party leader and prime minister- elect Abhisit Vejjajiva, an Oxford
Master on economics, will head the government's economic affairs. Abhisit was
elected Thailand's 27th prime minister after a House voting on Monday, taking
place Somchai Wongsawat, who lost his premiership with a court verdict on Dec. 2
that disbanded his People Power Party and banned all executives from
politics. The Democrat Party has been joined with at least four other smaller
parties and factions of MPs to form a new coalition government.
