Indonesia and Malaysia have signed a deal on cooperation and supervision
over borders, a newspaper said in Jakarta today. The agreement is expected to
relieve tension between the two countries over illegal logging, human
trafficking and terrorism, the Jakarta Post said. The signing was carried out
by Indonesia's West Kalimantan military command and the Malaysian
military. "The MoU is a follow up on a recent agreement signed between the
two countries," said Maj. General Tono Suratman, chief of the military
command. The general said the agreement related to the coordination of
military personnel in the border areas. Both countries will station two
battalions of troops in Simanggaris (East Kalimantan), Etikong (West Kalimantan)
and Biawak (Sarawak, Malaysia). Malaysian army representative Maj. General
Dato' Mazelan said the agreement left open opportunities for the two countries
to cooperate on joint land operations.
