Cambodia's new King Norodom Sihamoni and his parents, the former King
Norodom Sihanouk and Queen Monineath arrived home on Wednesday from
Beijing. Government officials, members of the National Assembly and the
Senate, Prime Minister Hun Sen, and Speaker of the parliament Prince Norodom
Ranariddh welcomed King Sihamoni and his parents at the airport. Sihamoni,
51, was selected new king of Cambodia last Thursday by the nine-member Throne
Council, a week after his father Norodom Sihanouk announced his retirement in
Beijing, citing health reasons. The outgoing 81-year-old King Sihanouk has
said that he would stay close to and advise his son Sihamoni to perform his
royal duties as king of Cambodia in serving the interests of the nation, people,
religion, and humanitarian issues. Sihamoni has, recently, flown to China to
join his parents where they have undergone medical treatment since earlier this
year. He flew directly from France after he had finished his assignment as
Cambodia's Ambassador to UNESCO.
