Separatist guerrillas killed six people, including two counter insurgents, in
India-administered Kashmir even as security forces were put on high alert on the
eve of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit, the Indo-Asian News Service
(IANS) reported Tuesday. Heavily armed guerrillas Monday night barged into a
house in village Suzeen, about 30 km from Srinagar in Budgam district, and made
an attempt to abduct two pro-India militants who had come there to meet their
relatives, IANS reported quoting local police sources. According to a police
officer, the guerrillas opened fire from automatic weapons when the relatives
resisted the kidnap attempt, killing five people including two
counter-insurgents. A woman who was critically injured in the shooting
succumbed to her injuries later, the officer added. The attackers escaped under
the cover of darkness. No group has claimed responsibility for the
killings. Manmohan Singh will arrive in Srinagar on Wednesday, and the local
administration has sounded a security alert. More than 40,000 people have
died since the eruption of anti- Indian insurgency in the region in 1989.
