Car bomb targeting Iraqi Shiite leader kills 10

A car bomb that hit the office of a leading Iraqi Shiite official on
Monday killed at least 10 people and wounded some 15 others, witnesses told
Xinhua. The explosion occurred outside the office of the Supreme Council for
the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) in Jadriya district in southern
Baghdad. US soldiers cordoned off the area, banning media
coverage. Abdul-Aziz al-Hakim, head of the most powerful Shiite party,
survived the attack unscathed. The SCIRI, set up by Iraqi Shiites while in
exile in Iran under former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's rule, has fielded a
major list in Iraq's elections due on Jan. 30, 2005. Hakim's brother, a
previous party leader, was assassinated in August 2003 in twin car bomb attacks
in the holy city of Najaf, some 160 km south of Baghdad.
