Gunmen assassinated an Iraqi judge in eastern Baghdad on Tuesday as he
was leaving his home, police said. The judge, identified as Qais Hashim
al-Shameri, was killed along with his son when unidentified gunmen opened fire
at his car in eastern Baghdad. Insurgents regularly target Iraqi government
and police officials in an attempt to derail the upcoming parliamentary
elections. In recent weeks, Baghdad's provincial governor and the capital's
deputy police chief have also been assassinated.
