The Water Dai
The Water Dai people mainly live in the Xishuangbanna area in Yunnan Province. It has beautiful mountains, a mild climate, abundant rainfall, and there are bamboo forests, coconut trees and banana trees everywhere. In the vast primeval forest, there are many rare birds and unusual animals. Pretty peacocks often dance gracefully along jungle trails or beside a brook. Thus, people call the place which the Water Dai people inhabit "the Land of Peacocks".
About Dai Clothing
The Dai are valley-dwelling rice cultivators of China's southwest frontier. The name "Dai" has been used officially since 1953 to replace "Tai" or "Thai." There are three major subgroups: Dail, Daina and Daija. Within each subgroup there are regional units such as Daide, Daipeng, Daila, Dailian, and Pudai. Neighboring groups "Lahu, Hani, Jingpo, Benglong, Wa, Bulang, and Achang" call the Dai "Bitso", "Siam", or "La Sam".
The Satchel
The satchel, called the "Tong pa" in the Dai language, is a practical craftwork adored by the Dai people, for both women and men, young and old. During country fairs, nearly all Dai fellows in the marketplace wear a satchel. The elderly use satchels to hold cigarettes, betel nuts and some sundries.

The Water Splashing Festival is the new year in the Dai Calendar. It is held on April 13 to 18 once a year.
Touching Peacock Dance
