Hat Introduction

  

  The ancient chinese wore hats to keep up with fashion. During Zhou period, Dugu Xin, had his hat slightly slanted when hunting. As a result, chinese populace began to copy his style of wearing the hat slanted, which became a fashion. After Sui Wendi, Yang Jian, becoming the emperor, he weared a hat to hide the caruncle on his neck.But this accidently became the fashion

  According to History of the Song Dynasty,“The Han dynasty inherited the style of the Qin dynasty. There were thirteen different types of hats. Since the Wei-Jin dynasty people still used these hats, such as, law hats, high hats, hats for skilled craftsmen, mountain-like hats, square hats, Jian-Hua hats, Que-Di hats, swordsman's hats, Que-Fei hats, Jin-Xian hats, and many others.”In the Han dynasty, a man's rank and status was indicated by the style of his crown.Amongst all these hat, the most famous hat is "Wu Sha" hat.

  The "Wu Sha" hat is made by black"Sha" (a type of cotton) to knit. It is not a type of hat.Instead, any hat that uses "Sha"can be called "Wu Sha" hat. Before Sui Period, most emperors wore White Sha Hat. Most official wore "Wu Sha" hat. During Sui-Tang period, "Wu Sha" hat became the common hat worn in court. During Song period, "Wu Sha" hat had extended "legs". According to history, this was to prevent officials from secret talks. During Ming Period, the "Wu Sha' hat's standard style is: low at the front, high at the back, like a stair-case, the two“legs”assemble the cow's tongue,which have a length of 5 inches. Since only officals could wear "Wu Sha" hat in Ming Dynasty, it thus became the“offical hat"”and copied by other dynasties until Qing Dynasty.
