Pure Heart Church, formerly known as the Shanghai Presbyterian First Church, was founded in 1860. Since the church was located in the Pure Heart Institute (No. 597 Lujiabang Road), it got the name.

Pure Heart Church was built in 1923 in the then Dafochang Street (today's Dachang Street) and then the church was moved out from the school and settled here till now. It is a y-shape masonry structure.

The founder of the church John Marshall Willoughby Farnham and his wife opened Lowrie Institute (then named as Pure Heart Institute and Pure Heart High School, today's Shanghai Shinan High School) in 1860 and the Mary Farnham Girls' School (today's Shanghai No.8 Senior High School) in 1861.

According to the Xinmin Evening News' report on Nov 16, 2005, the graduates of the Pure Heart High School include the well-known physicist Tsung-Dao Lee, the famous cartoonist Ding Cong and the founders of Commercial Press Xia Ruifang, Bao Xian'en, Bao Xianchang and Gao Fengchi.

Great changes have taken place in the surrounding area of the church these years. A lot of old buildings were demolished and a new residential community was built while the old church was reserved, witnessing the history.

清心堂，原名“上海长老会第一会堂”，成立于清咸丰十年(1860年)。因该堂长期设在清心书院内（今陆家浜路597号），故又称“清心堂”。

1919年，李恒春牧师发起在附近的大佛厂街（今大昌街30号）建造清心堂，礼拜堂才从学校迁出，于1923年元旦落成开堂，使用至今。教堂建筑平面呈独特的“人”字形，为砖石结构。

此外，清心堂的创始人范约翰和妻子范玛利在1860年创办了清心男塾（娄离华学堂，后更名为清心书院、清心中学，今上海市市南中学），次年又创办清心女塾（今上海市第八中学）。

据2005年11月16日《新民晚报》报道，著名物理学家李政道、著名漫画家丁聪、商务印书馆的创始人夏瑞芳、鲍咸恩、鲍咸昌和高凤池都毕业于清心中学。

这些年，清心堂周围区域变化很大，很多老房子被拆迁，取而代之的是超大型居住小区“明日星城”，往日的街景地貌已不复存在，只留下了这座清心堂，见证着曾经的历史。
