Brookside Apartment is a v-shaped seven-story building. Initially, it was a garden residence of Taixing Bank, and then Li Hongzhang bought the house and his son Li Jingmai demolished it and built this Spanish style high-rise at the original site in 1930.

The apartment was designed by Hazzard Matheson, an influential architectural design firm in Shanghai at that time.

Covering an area of 3944 square meters, the apartment owns a 2500-square-meter garden and a swimming pool in the basement. It was a high-grade building in Shanghai in the 1930s.

枕流公寓坐落于华山路699－731号，是一幢七层的八字型建筑，由哈沙德洋行设计，建于1930年。原为泰兴银行大班的花园住宅，后被李鸿章购得，其子李经迈拆除旧居，在原址上建了这座西班牙式高层公寓。

大楼占地面积3944平方米，其中花园面积有2500平方米，地下室有游泳池。20世纪30年代，枕流公寓是上海滩的高档公寓。

Before 1949 the apartment was mainly rent to foreigners and after 1949 it was assigned to the cultural celebrities and so it was called "the cultural celebrity building".

The well-known singer Zhou Xuan was in the first batch of celebrities living in the Brookside Apartment. She had lived in a 150-square-meter room on the sixth floor since 1932 until she died in 1957.

In addition, the celebrities once living here included actors Sun Daolin and Qiao Qi, the Shaoxing opera actresses Fu Quanxiang, Fan Ruijuan and Wang Wenjuan(Sun Daolin's wife), literary theorist Ye Yiqun, painter Shen Roujian, the former editor in chief of Wenhui Daily Xu Zhucheng and the former president of Tongji University Li Guohao.

1949年前，枕流公寓主要为外侨租住，1949年后分配给文化界著名人士居住，故有“文化名人楼”之称。“金嗓子”周璇是最早入住的一批名人，她从1932年起便住在这里六楼的一套150平方米的居室，一直住到1957年去世。

其他入住枕流公寓的文化名人有：演员孙道临、乔奇，越剧演员范瑞娟、傅全香、王文娟，文艺理论家叶以群、画家沈柔坚、曾任《文汇报》总编辑的老报人徐铸成、同济大学老校长李国豪等。

Also, the apartment's name is quite interesting. It was named as Brookside Apartment since there were garden, lawn, hill, rock, water in it, which was rare in the architectures at that time. The Chinese name "Zhenliu", originating from an ancient writing Shi Shuo Xin Yu, implies that people here will live in seclusion, keeping away from noises and worries.

此外，枕流公寓的名字也很有意思，取名“枕流”，因为公寓内有2500平方米的花园、草坪和山石水流，地下室还有游泳池。这样的设置在当时公寓楼中是极为少见的。“枕流”二字出自於《世说新语》，取“枕石漱流”的含义，喻意在这儿生活的人能暂避喧嚣，过上枕石漱流般的隐居生活。
