Boston Symphony Orchestra

Founded in 1881, the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is one of the“Big Five”orchestras in America. It holds most concerts at Boston’s Symphony Hall, one of the world’s most revered concert halls. In the early years, the BSO was directed by several French conductors including Pierre Monteux that marked the beginning of its French tradition. In 1924, the Russian-born Serge Koussevitzky led the orchestra into its golden ages, by establishing its summer home at Tanglewood and commissioning many new works from prominent 20th century’s composers. In 1979, under the direction of Seiji Ozawa, the BSO became the first American orchestra to tour mainland China after the normalization of relations.
