The story is based in a futuristic dystopian Chicago, when a world war has diminished every nation on the planet. The survivors have gathered in Chicago. In order to maintain the peace permanently, creators of the new century divide the society into five factions: Abnegation (the selfless), Amity (the peaceful), Candor (the honest), Dauntless (the brave), and Erudite (the intelligent). Each faction has its own obligation to fulfill in society. Beatrice Prior has grown up in Abnegation, and will select her faction at the age of 16. However, her aptitude test shows attributes of three factions (Abnegation, Erudite and Dauntless), meaning she is Divergent. That puts her in a dangerous position as the creators consider Divergents a threat. At the choosing ceremony, Beatrice chooses Dauntless. As she begins her adult life in Dauntless, she becomes aware of a sinister plot.

The film is directed by Neil Burger. Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ashley Judd and Jai Courtney star in the film.
