A bell ringing ceremony is held every year in the historical Longhua Temple in Xuhui District to usher in the New Year. It has been a tourist program for more than 20 years.

The temple, the largest in Shanghai, has a history dating back to AD 242. On New Year’s Eve, Buddhist music and folk art performances will be played in the temple as people wait for the bell ringing ceremony. The massive bell will be struck 108 times to rid people of the 108 early sins and 108 visitors will have a chance to strike the bell.

Others can write their New Year’s wishes on a piece of red paper and tag them to a big tree in the temple. They can also have a bowl of monk’s noodles to invoke longevity and good luck in the New Year.

The temple has five worship halls, a bell tower and a drum tower, and a seven-storey pagoda built in AD 977 which is separated from the temple compound by a road.
