The exhibition of all the cross-stitch works comes out of 47 male foreign prisoners with different cultures and languages, which merges the embroidery skills of both China and foreign countries together with the verve of traditional Chinese painting.
The "cross-stitch" has been brought to China by foreign art work companies like Korea. It is greatly applauded by young people and white-collar workers and frequently appears in places of families, offices and entertainment because of its bright colour, strong stereoscopic sensation, and value of decoration.
Through the recommendation of leaders of the prison, the new form of art was introduced this June in the prison area of foreign prisoners. Under the instruction of professional teachers, foreign prisoners studied the operation of different embroidery methods such as stitching skills, thread pressing, cross stitch, half cross stitch, a quarter cross stitch, edge enhancement and so on. Generally speaking, a cross-stitch work needs threads from 20 to more than 40 colors. Some of the colors just have tiny differences with each other, which demands the embroiderers to distinguish icons of different thread colors very carefully and adopt the correct one according to the number of the thread. As for beginners, two to three weeks are needed to complete a work as tiny as a cell phone sack, which can be called "slow and steady wins the race".
The "embroiderers" coming out of foreign prisoners made marvellous progress after the rudiment study. Within less than half a year, they have grasped basic skills deftly and started to complete embroideries with different sizes and difficulties. The number of persons joining in this labour have increased from 5 to 47, and more persons are eager to have a try.
