Ten thousand people were falling over one another to set a new world record when they formed a human domino chain stretching five kilometers at a tourist spot in Changsha, capital of central China's Hunan Province, on Friday.
The record-breaking event was held on the opening ceremony of Hunan Tourism Festival which runs till Sept. 20.
It broke the Guinness World Record for a human domino line which was formed by 9,234 people on Siloso Beach in Singapore on Sept. 30, 2000, according to Yuan Xinhua, director of the provincial tourism department, who is also head of the organizing committee.
Wearing red, blue and white tee shirts, the dominoes had been sitting on the ground of "Window of the World" tourist attraction for over an hour, but everybody seemed happy and excited in the bright sunshine.
"I like dominoes very much. I feel lucky and excited being one of the players to break the world record," said a student from the local mass media college.
At about 11:20 a.m., a gun shot signaled the first human domino to lean against the one sitting behind. The players began leaning backwards one by one with their arms raised upward.
Gradually, the line fell around the lake and through the meadows, opening a spring, a Hunan Province map and other pictures and slogans. As they went by, cheers and laughter were heard among the players and the audience.
In 10 minutes, fireworks were seen, signaling the line's successful completion.
Two registrars from the provincial notarization department then claimed the process was genuine and the result convincing. The video would be sent to Guinness World Records Ltd in London to apply for the record.
Reporters from some 100 media organizations went to the ceremony. The provincial television station even used helicopters to track the falling dominoes.
