Australia called up third-ranked Mark Philippoussis as a member of their four-man team for the Davis Cup final against Spain, the team's captain John Fitzgerald said on Monday.
Philippoussis was named with former world number one Lleyton Hewitt, Wayne Arthurs and doubles specialist Todd Woodbridge for the tie, which is set to play on grass in Melbourne on November 28- 20.
All four have played this year in Australia's wins in the Davis Cup against Britain, Sweden and Switzerland. But instead of Hewitt, Philippoussis will act as the top-ranked singles player after Hewitt, the former US Open and Wimbledon champion who has not played since the Davis Cup semi-final victory over Switzerland in September, slipped to number 18 in the world rating.
Hewitt, Philippoussis and Woodbridge were all in the successful 1999 Davis Cup team who beat France in the final in Nice.
