Windstorm in central Russia kills six

A windstorm sweeping through a central Siberian region on Friday evening killed at least six people with 58 others injured, the Itar-Tass news agency reported Saturday.

The strong wind, raging in the city of Irkutsk and the central and southern Baikal region at a speed of 30 meters a second, tore away building roofs, broke heavy tree trunks and wires and overturned electro-transmission line supports, according to the local emergencies department.

One was killed by a falling tree and another electrocuted by a downed power line in the city of Irkutsk, about 4200 kilometers east of Moscow. A small girl, who hid under a tree, died after a heavy tree branch struck her, Itar-Tass said.

Several dozen people were hospitalized across the region.
