Ferrero moves into second round after top seed Costa's crash

Second seed Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain advanced to the second round while top-seeded Albert Costa of Spain was knocked out in the first round of the Swiss Open tennis tournament in Gstaad on Tuesday.

Ferrero, the losing finalist of the tournament last year, advanced over his compatriot Alberto Martin 6-2, 6-2, winning a clay match for the first time after four previous defeats.

Costa was shut down by French qualifier Paul-Henri Mathieu, losing 6-4, 6-3.

Another seed was also toppled, with Attila Savolt of Hungary beating sixth seed Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador 7-5, 1-6, 7-5.

Third seed Roger-Federer of Switzerland edged Hicham Arazi of Morocco 6-4, 6-3; Argentina's seventh seed Gaston Gaudio came from behind to down his compatriot Franco Squillari 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 and Czech Radek Stepanek outclassed Spanish veteran Francisco Clavet 6-3, 6-3.
