City to initiate wind electric power generation

Shanghai will use wind power to generate electricity in about a year's time,Jiefang Daily reported today.

Construction of relative power generation facilities has been started recently along coasts in north Shanghai's Chongming Island and southeast Shanghai's Nanhui District.

The project will cost some a year and 192million yuan (US$23million).It's jointly invested by the Shanghai Electric Co.and the National Electric Co.

Power generators of the first phase will have a totaling capacity of 20,000kilowatts.

Shanghai,a costal city, has rich wind power and has a very promising future in the wind electric power generation sector, officials said.

The project is expected to increase the city's power supply. The city's installed power generating capacity stands at some 10million kilowatts now and it buys electricity of more than one million kilowatts from neighboring areas.

To fill in a gap between demande and supply, the city is building more electricity generators and also garbage incineration plants turning heat into electricity power.
