South Korean student volunteers for the Daegu World University Games have launched a support group called Green Squad,modeled after the nationwide RedDevil fans of last year's World Cup in South Korea.
The Green Squad will stage various campaigns to enhance public awareness of the international sports festival for college students,as well as cheering on athletes at event venues.
"I will not only applaud South Korean athletes,but also cheer for athletes from other teams,"said Kwon Hyun Seok,a student volunteer working at the information desk in Daegu Universiad media center.
A gala concert took place in front of the Daegu Citizens'Gymnasium on Sunday,attended by several pop stars,to celebrate the debut of the support group.A group of college students,all in green-shirts,waved balloons in the cheerleading practice.
"I'm happy to be part of the Universiade,"added Kwon.
Besides Daegu,the host city of the 22nd Summer Universiade,other seven cities in North Gyeongsang Province will also play host to five events-football,basketball,volleyball,gymnastics and archery.More than 15,000volunteers from across South Korea have joined hands to ensure the success of the grand gathering forcollege students.
