BOCOG official pays tribute to Daegu Universiade 23/8/2003

The organization of the 22nd World University Games is overall "excellent",a top official of the Beijing 2008Olympic Organizing Committee (BOCOG)said here on Saturday.

BOCOG vice president Liu Jingmin, who was here on a three-day visit to the Universiade, said the opening ceremony Thursday night was very impressive.

"It's short but very warm, and full of the characteristics of the Korean culture,"Liu told Xinhua.

The opening ceremony, highlighted by impressive choreographed and technology-backed images and sounds, showcased the history of Daegu,a city recognized for its initiative in the textile and fashion industry,as well as its global orientation.

Liu,along with 14working staff from BOCOG,also paid visits to the athletes'village,Main Press Center,International Broadcasting Center and various venues for the Universiade, which runs August 21-31.

"The athletes'village is well-equipped,and the dormitories are all spacious and comfortable,"said Liu.

Liu,also deputy mayor of Beijing, which hosted last Universiade in 2001,spoke highly of the volunteers and cheering squad.

"Volunteers are enthusiastic.Whatever difficulties you have, they are ready to help you,"said Liu.

"What impressed me most is the cheering squad. They are well-organized and zealous, creating a favorable environment for athletes.

"For Beijing,it's extremely worthy of learning from Daegu and South Korea in these aspects,"he added.

Beijing, which was awarded the right to host the 29th Olympic Games in July,2001,has promised to stage a best-ever Games in 2008.
