Games roundup:South Korea dominates Universiade for Day 2 23/8/2003

The second full day of the 22nd World University Games belonged to South Korea as the host country reaped four gold medals out of five at stake on Saturday.

Chu Mu-yen of Chinese Taipei snatched the men's -58kg taekwondogold to avoid a clean sweep by the hosts.Chu,silver medalist atlast year's Busan Asian Games,took the title after Turkey's Dincsalman Kivanc retired when trailing 3-0in the final.

South Korea,who eyes a second finish in the overall gold medaltable,now tops the tally with five gold and one silver,followed by China and Chinese Taipei with one gold,one silver and two bronze each.

China,who saw three of their fencers in the women's epee semi-finals,missed out a good chance of winning the gold as South Korean Kim Hee Jeong outscored Luo Xiaojun 7-4in the semi-final and edged Zhang Li 8-7in the final.

"We should have won the gold,but we lost it because our fencers lack competition experience,"said Chinese coach Xu Xuening.

Led by Zhang throughout regulation time,Kim forced a 7-7tie with only 44seconds to go.As the match went into extra time,Kimwas forced to defend against constant attacks by her Chinese opponent before scoring the decisive point with only 37seconds left.

Li Na and Luo added two bronze medals for China.

The host fully demonstrated its depth in taekwondo,the South Korean martial art,as Kim Hak-hwan defeated Iran's Ali Tajik in the men's -78kg final,Jang Eun-suk beat Chinese Taipei's Wu Yen-ni for the women's -51kg title and Hwang Kyung-hwa overcame Spaniard Ibone Lallana to win the women's -67kg category.

The US women's basketball team shook off their opening shock loss to Italy as the defending champions thrashed diminutive Thais104-63.

In other women's matches,Russia defeated Czech Republic 62-43in the last Group D preliminary,and both teams advanced to the second round.

South Korea was eliminated from the Universiade following an 82-77defeat at the hands of Ireland.

Canada won their second straight game in the second round of the men's basketball tournament,scoring a 73-69victory over Estonia.

They will square off against the Russians,who also chalked up their second win after beating Hungary 88-65.

The Chinese men's volleyball team suffered their second defeat in as many matches,losing 25-19,25-11,25-16to Russia.

"I'm satisfied with my boys though they lost to Russia,who arethe strongest in the group,"said Chinese team leader Tian Jianjun."But they are getting better with each game and we expect a victory in the next one."

China will take on Hong Kong,China,who were crushed by Japan 25-9,25-13,25-10in 52minutes.

Denmark produced the biggest upset in the men's volleyball as they outclassed defending champions United States 26-24,25-23,19-25,25-16.

Russia's Irina Chashchina led the individual rhythmic gymnastics standings with 56.700points after the hoop and ball routines.China's Zhong Ling and Zhu Minhong placed a distant fourth and fifth.

Water polo competition kicked off Saturday as Serbia and Montenegro downed France 10-2,Italy edged Japan 12-9,Spain beat Mexico 11-3,Australia upset Russia 8-6.

Swimming and diving competition will start Sunday with 16gold medals to be decided.
