Harvest for China at Universiade, but There's Room to Improve, Says 31/8/2003

The Chinese athletes reaped a lot in the 11-day 22nd World University Games, but there' s still room to improve, a delegation official said on Sunday.

The Chinese delegation grabbed 41 golds, 27 silvers and 13 bronzes in their 14th World University Games to top the medal tally, repeating their fete in the Beijing two years ago.

Pan Zhichen, deputy chef-de-mission of the Chinese delegation, said the delegation had harvested not only numerous medals but also experience from the Games.

The Universiade, dubbed "mini Olympics", attracted more than 6, 600 athletes and officials from 174 countries and regions worldwide to the 22nd version."Chinese athletes learnt a lot of experience here, which will be helpful for their preparation for the Athens Olympic Games," Pan said.

"We are especially pleased with the titles won in the team events such as the women's basketball and volleyball," said Pan. "It shows that our athletes paid much attention to team work needed in sports."

"But that does not mean we have no problem," continued Pan, adding that although China clinched the most golds, none of the Chinese athletes had performed as well as they did in the recent world championships.

"So we required them to work harder and the coaches to be stricter during training in the future in a hope to do well in Athens," said Pan.
