S.Korea denies light water reactor being built in DPRK to be suspended 29/8/2003

The South Korean Ministry of Unification on Friday denied a Japanese newspaper's report that the two light water reactors being built in Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)would be suspended for one year."urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"

The Asahi Shimbun reported that during a working level meeting of the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization (KEDO)held in News York last week, the participants agreed to temporarily suspend the reactors'construction work for one year.

A news release issued by the Unification Ministry said the KEDO convened a meeting to discuss details about the construction of the two light water reactors."But the participants did not make any decision."

"The KEDO members are consulting on the fate of the project, but no decision, including the date of the next KEDO governor of board meeting, has been made,"the release said.

In the Agreed Framework the DPRK and the United States signed in 1994,the United States promised to help Pyongyang to build two light water reactors and provide 500,000tons of heavy fuel oil every year to the DPRK,and Pyongyang,in return, agreed to halt its nuclear facilities.

After the issue on the DPRK nuclear program erupted last year, the KEDO suspended the shipment of the oil to Pyongyang, and the construction of the two light water reactors has slowly progressed.
