Nigeria calls for greater restraint on DPRK nuclear issue 30/8/2003

The Nigerian federal government on Friday called for greater restraint among all the six parties involved in the stand-off over the Democratic People's Republic ofKorea (DPRK)'s nuclear weapons program.

While meeting with DPRK Ambassador Kim Pyong-Gi in his office,Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar called on the six parties attending the talks in Beijing for "the peaceful resolution of theKorean Peninsula issues."

He said the DPRK had undergone very difficult experiences in its history and noted that it was understandable that the Asian country felt very strongly about its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The DPRK ambassador said his country had recorded "dramatic changes"in its relations with the Republic of Korea, pointing outthat the two nations had re-established road and rail links between them.

He said the emerging changes pointed toward the unification of the "two separated families",but he said it was regrettable that recent development between his country and the United States was threatening the modest achievement recorded between them.

"Lessons from Iraq and other countries show that our country should be strong enough to defend its sovereignty,"he said."We will oppose the world's colonization by the US administration."

The Beijing talks on the DPRK nuclear issue, involving China, the DPRK,the United States, the Republic of Korea,Russia and Japan, began on Wednesday morning and ended on Friday with an agreement to meet again within two months but no date or venue wasset.
