Arroyo calls on ASEAN to support Group of 20 6/10/2003

Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo called on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)to support the Group of 20 in WTO for the collective interest of developing countries.

"The collapse of the WTO trade talks in Mexico unravels the disparity in perception between first and third world countries onhow international trade should be conducted," Arroyo delivered herspeech before the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit in Indonesia's Bali Monday.

She said the emergence of the Group of 20 in Cancun is a development that "the Philippines will continue to work with to press for agricultural reforms and removal of first world subsidies to farm sectors."

"ASEAN should unite in support of this alliance to push for ourcollective interest in the WTO and ensure a just and fair global trading system," Arroyo said.

Arroyo is in Bali to hold summit with leaders from the nine other ASEAN countries, namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The Summit, scheduled for Oct. 7-8, also will include leaders from China, Japan, India and South Korea as ASEAN's dialogue partners.
