The Jordanian government is primarily concerned about the the security and safety of the Iraqi people and political stabilization in the country, spokeswoman Asma Khader said Sunday.
"The Iraqi people have a final word on the arrest of Saddam Hussein and his destiny," Khader was quoted as saying by the official Petra news agency, while commenting the arrest of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
The US forces in Iraq announced earlier in the day that Saddam, who had been on the run since his regime was collapsed on April 9, was captured alive Saturday evening near his hometown of Tikrit in northern Iraq.
Jordan hopes that "a chapter of the Iraqi people's history has been turned over and the Iraqi people would be able to run their own affairs and build their future in accordance with their own will," the spokeswoman said.
Khader stressed that the Jordanian leadership, government and people always look forward to developing relations with Iraq.
