Bird flu case reported in Tibet 16/2/2004

China reported yesterday a case of bird flu in Tibet, the first case in the nation's Himalayan region.

Officials also found a suspected case in poultry in the northeastern province of Jilin, which if confirmed would be the first case in that area, state television said. The report raises the number of regions on China's mainland with confirmed or suspected cases to 16. China has reported no cases of the disease in humans. Also yesterday, China confirmed previously suspected cases in poultry in Hubei and Guangdong provinces, both of which already had confirmed cases.
