Huang Jufen, 60, scanned the bar code on a chicken she bought using a machine installed at a supermarket in Shanghai yesterday.
The screen immediately showed that the chicken was recently processed by Shanghai Dajiang (Group) Stock Co Ltd and it has passed a quarantine inspection and been certified as safe by the city government.
"I will buy chicken or eggs without much worry now that all the poultry goods can be checked here by the machine," Huang said.
The city government has set up a database for poultry products produced in the city.
Starting yesterday, con-sumers can check the goods by scanning their bar codes at 14 outlets of NGS Supermarket, Lianhua Supermarket, Lianhua Century Mart and Hualian Supermarket. The machines will be installed in all of the city's hypermarkets by the end of this year.
