No bird flu cases found in local chicken farms

Wendy Zhang/ Shanghai Daily news

Shanghai residents can set their heart at ease when eating eggs as more than 40 existing chicken farms in the city report no bird flu cases to date.

Shanghai residents usually eat nearly 4.8 million eggs, or 300 tons, every day. Since the outbreak of bird flu in China, egg sales in Shanghai slumped by 30 percent.

With the country gradually putting a lid on the spreading of bird flu cases, sales of egg products in Shanghai Nong Gong Shang Supermarket and Hualian Supermarket have gone up, with 'A Qiang' branded eggs reporting 20 percent in sales increase over the past two weeks and 9-10 tons of eggs supplied every day.

In local Lianhua Supermarket, 500 kilograms of eggs with its own Lianhua brand can be sold every day at one of its outlets.
