Argentina to send "white helmets" to Haiti for humanitarian aid 3/3/2004

Argentina agreed to send "white helmets" for humanitarian aid in strife-torn Haiti, following its rejection of the deployment of military or police forces in the Caribbean nation, the Argentine Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

The "white helmets" and the humanitarian assistance will be flown to Haiti in an air force plane from a base near Buenos Aires. An advance team is already in Haitian capital Port-au-Prince to study the feasibility of the dispatch.

According to the ministry, Argentina would also contribute food, medicine and equipment for providing drinking water.

The dispatch of Argentine "white helmets" was agreed Tuesday ata meeting between Argentine President Nestor Kirchner and US Ambassador Lino Gutierrez.

Former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide stepped down Sunday before rebel forces were to topple him amid a military and political crisis. He flew into exile in Central Africa in a US airplane and he claimed to have been forced at gunpoint to resign.

Chilean President Ricardo Lagos agreed to send 270 military personnel to the Caribbean nation, while Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has not made such commitment.
