Tens of Canadians arrived in the Dominican Republic after evacuating from Haiti by airplanes rented by their government, the spokesman to 21th Century Dominican Airports (AERODOM) Ellis Perez said Tuesday.
Perez stated that at least 143 people, mostly Canadians and Haitian-Canadians, were flown Monday in two airplanes to Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic.
On Tuesday the evacuation of Canadians to The Americas International Airport in Santo Domingo province continued.
Dominican airports are being used by several countries and international organizations to pull out their citizens from Haiti in face of the political crisis affecting the nation.
Last Friday several Dominican helicopters evacuated foreign diplomatic personnel from their embassies in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince.
Ambassador to Haiti Alberto Despradel said that the Dominican government offered two diplomatic helicopters for the international community.
On Feb. 26, a group of 12 people including four Spaniards, one Bolivian, one Chilean and three Haitian minors adopted by Spanish families were pulled out from Haiti and flown to Santo Domingo in a plane rented by the Spanish government.
