Haitian rebel leader pledges to lay down arms 3/3/2004

Rebel leader Guy Philippe who led the overthrow of Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide pledged Wednesday his forces would deliver their guns and cease to patrol the streets of the capital Port-au-Prince.

Philippe made the announcement to the press following a meetingwith an official of the US Marines, reports from Port-au-Prince said.

The United States had warned Philippe that there would be no place for him in Haiti's political future and advised him to cast away his ambition to control the country.

Philippe assured that in face of the deployment of foreign troops vowing to defend Haitians, "we will lay down the guns."

He led the rebellion that ended with Aristide's resignation andexile on last Sunday and Tuesday proclaimed himself chief of Haiti's armed forces and police.

The United States and France deployed military effectives to restore order in the embattled Caribbean nation where clashes between opponents and supporters to the former president still take place.

Aristide claimed to have been forced out of the presidency at gun point by US military who flew him to exile in the Central African Republic.

The 15-member Caribbean Community and Common Market ended Wednesday an emergency meeting in Jamaica with a call on the international community to probe on Aristide's abrupt resignation.
