Five killed in anti-Aristide demonstration in Haiti 7/3/2004

At least five people were killed and 19 others wounded Sunday in a shooting spree outside the National Palace in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince.

According to reports from Port-au-Prince, the dead included Spaniard Ricardo Ortega, a correspondent for the Antena 3 Spanish television station.

The shootings took place when thousands of Haitians took to thestreets in a demonstration to celebrate the fall of Jean-Bertrand Aristide, who fled into exile on Feb. 29.

The reports quoted eyewitnesses as saying that suspected supporters of Aristide's Lavalas Family party fired from rooftops.

US Marines leading an international peacekeeping force in Haitirushed to the scene and military helicopters hovered over the palace.
