Haiti's rebel leader warns of rearming rebel group 9/3/2004

Haiti's rebel leader Guy Philippe warned Monday that he will reunite his followers and take up weapons again if the international peacekeepers do not disarm militant loyalists of Jean-Bertrand Aristide, reports from Port-au-Prince said.

Phillippe was quoted by the Haitian radio station as saying Sunday's attack, which took place in the capital city of Port-au-Prince, would not have happened if his men had not been asked to lay down their weapons.

Following Sunday's attack, hundreds of people looted a store near the airport of Port-au-Prince on Monday, carrying away a large amount of goods.

Six people, including a Spanish journalist, were killed when gunmen opened fire at thousands of Haitians celebrating the fall of Aristide outside the National Palace on Sunday. It was the mostserious violent incident since former President Aristide was forced to resign and leave Haiti on Feb. 29.

Boniface Alexandre, who has served as interim Haitian President for a week, was officially sworn in on Sunday, while Aristide claimed in the Central African Republic where he is in exile Monday that he was still Haiti's president.
