Haitian new cabinet sworn in 18/3/2004

Haiti's new government was sworn in Wednesday, with none of the ousted president Jean-Bertrand Aristide's party member included, reports from the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince said.

Haiti's interim president Boniface Alexandre swore in the cabinet at the National Palace in the capital, and Prime Minister Gerard Latortue handed letters of appointment to new government members he hand picked Tuesday evening.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Latortue, who was appointed a week ago by a Haitian council, trumpeted the cabinet as "nonpartisan," saying it was the first time that a Haitian government was born from democratic consultation.

The 13-member government, with none of the ousted Aristide's Lavalas Family party member included, would give priority to restoring law and order in the revolt-torn country, and to establishing a credible judicial system as well as an electoral body, Latortue said.

Installed following days of discussions among the council members, the opposition and Aristide's Lavalas party, the cabinet was hailed by the United States as a wise choice which would pave the way for a stable situation in the Caribbean nation, US news agency quoted US ambassador James Foley as saying.

However, some Haitian politicians complained that it was unfairto exclude members of Aristide's Lavalas party from the government.

The ceremony came after Aristide returned two days ago from exile in the Central African Republic for temporary asylum in Jamaica, a move infuriated Haiti's new government for fear that Aristide's presence, just 185 km away from Haiti's shores, might galvanize his supporters at home.

Aristide, a former slum priest, has been accusing the United States of kidnapping him from power on Feb. 29 following weeks of turmoil, a charge denied by the United States.
