Canadian troops leave for Haiti 18/3/2004

About 170 Canadian soldiers left for Haiti capital of Port-au-Prince for a three-month mission, it is reported here Wednesday.

They are part of 450 Canadian Forces personnel being sent on "Operation Halo." The Canadians will join US marines and French soldiers already patrolling the Haitian capital. They will also help guard facilities, such as the port and airport.

Speaking to troops upon their departure for Haiti, Canadian Defense Minister David Pratt said there is a good chance Canada will keep a police force in the country when their mission is over.

Two cargo planes left for Haiti Tuesday loaded with vehicles and supplies needed for the Canadian troops.
