Proposed Taiwan 'referendum' risky: Lao deputy PM 14/1/2004

The so-called "referendum" on independence for Taiwan is risky and runs contrary to the will of the Chinese people as a whole, said visiting Lao Deputy Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh Tuesday in Beijing.

Bouasone said in a meeting with Chinese Vice-President Zeng Qinghong in the Great Hall of the People that the Lao government would adhere to the policy of one China and always held that Taiwan was part of China.

Zeng said China was satisfied with the smooth development of relations with Laos. The new generation of China's central leadership valued the friendly and good-neighborly relationship.

Zeng said China and Laos had expanded relations by strengthening cooperation, and the two sides regularly exchanged experiences on government and supported each other in regional andinternational affairs.

Bouasone spoke highly of the bilateral relations and thanked China and the Chinese people for their assistance in the national construction and economic development of Laos.
