Mubarak to attend Arab summit: presidential source 27/3/2004

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will attend an Arab summit due in Tunisia on March 29-30, a presidential source told Xinhua on Saturday.

"The president will participate in the gathering as scheduled, and he will expound Egypt's views on the restructuring of the Arab League and reform of the Arab world," the source said.

It was reported that Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, Bahraini King Hamad bin Eissa, Sultan Qaboos bin Said of Oman and Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Jabir Al-Sabah would not attend the gathering.

Earlier in the day, a well-informed source told Xinhua in Tunisia that Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei will not show up at the summit.

Farouk al Kadoumy, director of the Political Department of the Palestine Liberation Organization, will replace Qurei to head the Palestinian delegation, the source said.

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, who has been confined to his headquarters in the West Bank city of Ramallah since December 2001, will attend the summit by a satellite-transmitted address.

During the low-profile summit, representatives of the 22 Arab League member states are scheduled to focus on the Palestinian- Israeli conflict, post-war Iraq and the restructuring of the Arab League.
